I just received a new shipment of books I ordered online. One of them was Elsewhere, by Gabrielle Zevin. What an amazing story! It is told from the point of view of Liz, an almost-16-year-old, who was recently killed in a car-bike accident. At first, she doesn't realize she is dead, but when she ends up in Elsewhere and meets the grandmother she never knew (named Betty, who died of cancer before Liz was born), Liz must accept the truth. I appreciate the fresh take on the afterlife theme, since everyone in Elsewhere actually reverse ages until they are a newborn and then return to earth to be born and raised as someone else. I started this book on Saturday afternoon, and was finished by 9:00 pm the next evening. It is a quick read, and gets the reader to really think. The writing is stupendous. Check out this book in our classroom library today!
