Here are our first flipgrid videos, where we share our reviews of one of the Mock Caldecott Award nominees. Mrs. Otto has been reading picture books almost every day, and then the students evaluate them based on artistic criteria. The students were asked to choose one review, revise it to be presented, practice it, and then record a video review using flipgrid. They made sure to include PVLEGS in their presentations.

Well, we are all done with the Encyclopedias of Our Ordinary Lives projects. What a great way to express and reflect (memoir writing). Please check out the students' work, which was shared on a Google Presentation.
Our latest project was collaborative writing with a 5th grade class from Alabama. Our students drew a detailed, colorful picture of a monster. Then, they described the monster via a Google presentation slide. Finally, I put all of our description slides together (no pictures) and shared them with the Alabama class. They read our descriptions and drew a monster to (hopefully) match our original drawing. Those pictures were scanned and shared on the same document. Yesterday, we had the chance to see their representations. We were surprised how some looked so close to the original, and others only vaguely resembled our drawings. When we read over the written descriptions, we realized how important it is to be specific with our writing. In the lab tomorrow, we will revise our original description to be clearer.

This week, we wondered about whether fish asleep with their eyes open after watching Wonderopolis. We wrote top ten lists and games of our childhood. Last week, we wrote about what bugs us, and shared favorite foods of our childhood. Finally, we wrote about what we wanted to learn. Next week, we will be doing an exciting technology project related to our writing so far.

We are now exploring our writing territories after setting up and decorating our writer's notebooks. The first 30 days of writing will focus on writing every day, exploring our interests through choice, learning writing strategies, and modeling/practicing the writing process. At the end of this time period, the students will create an encyclopedia/memoir or showcase the writing purpose of express and reflect. These writing notebooks will rarely come home.
