We had an exciting time in pm reading today. The students had the opportunity to Skype with Mr. Akerman's 6th graders from Missouri. They presented a trial, where evidence for and against Mesopotamia being a civilization was presented. The students took notes on the evidence in all seven areas (government, social class, writing, religion, technology, stable food supply, and fine arts). Next, the students worked in small groups/partners to deliberate over the evidence online via TodaysMeet. Finally, we took an anonymous class vote and decided that there was not enough compelling evidence to support Mesopotamia as a true civilization. Thanks to all of these students for their hard work and respect shown to our 6th grade Skype friends.

Morning Reading had fun during our TodaysMeet / Skype with Mr. Yen's class in California. What an amazing opportunity! Afternoon reading Skyped with a 6th grade class at our neighbor school, Zanewood. We discussed our Global Read Aloud (GRA) book with each class. In the morning class, we even read aloud to each class on the Skype. We would love to do it again soon.
Our afternoon reading class Skyped with a 5th grade class from a neighboring school, Zanewood. We enjoyed sharing our thoughts and predictions about our Global Read Aloud (GRA) book, One for the Murphys, with Mrs. Wessel's class. Their students were very respectful during their first Skype, even clapping for our students when they answered a question. We did the same for them. We enjoy connecting with classes outside of Woodland!

We have been doing lots of reading over the past month. Students read to self every day towards their 40 book challenge. These are all choice books, from either our classroom library (over 3,000 books between both classrooms), the media center, home, bookstore or the public library. Students are always asked to read widely (from many genres) and confer with me at least once per week. In addition, we finished our first class read-aloud (am group-Top Ten Ways to Ruin the First Day of School, pm-Dash). Make sure to check out the students' blogs by clicking on the link at the top of this page. We did not blog this week since it was so short, but we will blog about once a week throughout the school year. You can comment on their blog posts, as well as read the comments from other classes around the country.
The students and I are in our second week of the Global Read-Aloud (GRA), reading and discussing the same book with thousands of other students around the world. The morning group is reading The Fourteenth Goldfish, and the afternoon group is reading One For the Murphys. Both classes have a Skype visit scheduled for next Tuesday to discuss these books with another class.
Both classes are learning to notice Signposts as they read. Our first two were Contrasts & Contradictions and A-Ha Moments. Next, they will learn about Tough Questions. These signposts will be used for discussion during future read-alouds, Socratic Seminars and other texts.
Today and into next week, both classes will begin their word work/vocabulary activities. Look for more information to come home in the next few days. Here is a link to the first WordMasters meet words for the afternoon reading class. I encouraged them to start studying these definitions. http://quizlet.com/52430757/flashcards

I am so excited to share my love of reading with all of the Otto and Wagenman students! Last week, we discovered all of the spots in the classroom to share about books. There's a graffiti wall to share favorite book quotes. There's an author all-star wall to see what the authors of our favorite books look like. There's also a display of book series to get us excited to try a new book in one of the series.
Then, there's our classroom library. All books are separated by genre, and Otto's library has a section devoted to reading with a friend, which includes titles with multiple copies. Between Otto and Wagenman's libraries, the students have about 3,000 books to check out. Research shows that classrooms with large libraries contribute to increases in reading ability. Students can check out and return books from either library. Otto's library checkout system is Booksource, and Wagenman's checkout system is Delicious.
In addition, the students learned about our 40 book challenge. They all received information for their binders, as well as a letter to share with parents/guardians. There will be time to read every day, once we begin our 90 minute reading block on September 22. Each time a student finishes a book, they can sign their name on our classroom display. We began a class read-aloud, Top Ten Ways to Ruin the First Day of School. It's a humorous start to our read-aloud experiences. On Tuesday, we have our media orientation. Then, students can check out books from the media center as well.
Please email or send a note if you have any questions. Thanks!
